Aphasia Camp June 4th and 5th, 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Aphasia is often a hidden disability, isolating survivors, friends and family that live in the community from the world they knew before their stroke. Speech therapy services for people with aphasia are under-funded, expensive or not available in the Peel-Halton area.  To bring awareness to this issue, March of DimesCanada, along with members of the Community Aphasia Committee hosted by West GTA Stroke Network has been approached by community membersto host an Aphasia Camp in Mississauga.  The goal of the event is to offer a recreational day camp for people with aphasia and their family members or friends – to experience two days of fun in an inclusive environment where their disability disappears. It will be an opportunity to have a fun, educational and entertaining event, while bringing aphasia awareness. The mission of the initiative is to be physically accessible (adapted sports and activities, accessible facilities, etc.),  communicatively-accessible (using supportive conversation techniques) while reconnecting and re-engaging stroke survivors into their community. Through training in supported conversation techniques, staff, students and volunteers will learn tools to communicate and interact with people with aphasia. The success of the camp focuses on planning with speech language pathologists, adaptive recreation specialists, as well as stroke survivors with aphasia.  If you are interested in hearing more about Aphasia Camp 2011 and beyond, please contact Laura Klaponski, Aphasia Camp Coordinator and Education and Health Promoterat This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or call 1-800-263-3463 x7212.
